They hold a very natural beauty with their silver or tan bodies with a thick black\/gray band running along their back and a small spot of rusty orange near their shoulder. They can be distinguished from their close relative, \u003ci\u003eO. zygatus\u003c\/i\u003e, by how the Rabaut's Osteogaster lacks a green shine over their scales that is present in \u003ci\u003eO. zygatus\u003c\/i\u003e and by how their dark band just barely extends into their caudal fin. The Rabaut's Osteogaster also is shorter bodied than \u003ci\u003eO. zygatus\u003c\/i\u003e. While they are a hardy species, the same usual rules for \u003ci\u003eCorydoradinae \u003c\/i\u003ecare still applies if they are to thrive in captivity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003e  Rabaut's Osteogaster were previously classified as \u003ci\u003eCorydoras rabauti\u003c\/i\u003e, but were reclassified as \u003ci\u003eOsteogaster rabauti\u003c\/i\u003e upon publication of a phylogenomic analysis in 2024 that reclassified many species in the \u003ci\u003eCorydoradinae\u003c\/i\u003e subfamily.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003ci\u003e  Corydoradinae \u003c\/i\u003eare small, peaceful catfish that are active shoalers and will stay near conspecifics, making for a lovely sight. They feed by searching through sand with their barbels, making such a substrate necessary for their long-term health. Gravel substrates tend to be abrasive and damage the barbels, leading to infections and an inability to find food.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e  While these friendly catfish are willing to swim with other species of \u003ci\u003eCorydoradinae\u003c\/i\u003e different from their own, this does not provide the same social need as being kept with members of their own species. Because of this, it is highly recommended to keep at least six of each species of \u003ci\u003eCorydoradinae\u003c\/i\u003e present in the aquarium and only mix species if one has the space to keep at least six of each.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e  \u003ci\u003eCorydoradinae\u003c\/i\u003e are often looked at as \"scavengers,\" but they should be treated in a similar fashion as the rest of your fish. They are omnivores and require a mixed diet.
